郑庄公自从打败了周桓王的王师之后，直至周桓王十九年，庄公病了。五月，庄公驾鹤西去，世子忽即位，就是郑昭公！

昭公的弟弟，公子突的母亲雍氏是宋国的名门望族，宋国的文武大臣大多数都是雍氏家族的人，公子突早就对郑国国君之位垂涎已久。突利用母亲家族的影响力和国君宋庄公达成协议，等到郑国上卿蔡足到宋国致聘行之礼时将蔡足控制，威逼利诱蔡足协助公子突篡位！是日，蔡足果然就范，史官有诗讥蔡足云：

丈夫宠辱不能惊，国相如何受胁陵！

若是忠臣拼一死，宋人未必敢相轻。

公子突和宋国雍纠等人打扮成做买卖的商贾，跟着蔡足回到郑国，都藏在蔡足的家里。蔡足放出话去，说自己病重不能上朝了，那这个文武大臣就都去蔡足家里探望，蔡足提前埋伏好兵甲，见到大家后说：“先君宠爱子突，嘱诸宋公，今宋率车六百乘，辅突伐郑。郑国未宁，何以挡之？”众人面面相觑。蔡足曰：“欲解宋兵，唯有废立可免耳。公子突见在，诸君从否？”高渠弥因为和世子忽也就是现在的郑昭公有嫌隙，挺身抚剑而出：“相君此言，社稷之福。吾等愿见新君！”众人听高渠弥这么说，又看见屏帐后兵甲晃动，见到公子突之后全都拜伏于地。

蔡足等人写下联名信给昭公，昭公看后知道自己孤立无援，出笨卫国去了！公子突即位，是为厉公！
